Your Sales Pipeline Is Probably in Your Head

Sales pipeline sounds like corporate language for something you do not have. In practice every business has one. The question is whether it exists anywhere other than your memory.

What a pipeline actually is

It is the list of people who might buy from you, sorted by how close they are to deciding. That is all.

You already know this list. There is someone you quoted last week, someone who asked about availability, someone who said to call back after the holidays. That is your pipeline.

Why keeping it in your head fails

Memory is biased towards recent conversations. The person you spoke to yesterday feels more important than the one from three weeks ago, even when the older one was closer to buying.

Memory also fails silently. You do not get an alert when you forget someone. They simply never hear from you again and you never know it happened.

What changes when you write it down

Three things. You stop losing people to forgetfulness. You can see how much potential work is actually in front of you, which makes decisions about hiring or marketing far less anxious. And you notice patterns, like enquiries stalling at the same stage every time.

That third one is where most improvement comes from. You cannot fix a bottleneck you cannot see.

Keep it simple

You do not need elaborate stages. New enquiry, quoted, waiting on them, won, lost. Five is plenty. The value is in it existing somewhere visible, not in how sophisticated it is.

Our CRM toolbox includes pre-built pipelines so you are not designing one from scratch. If you would rather talk through how your sales process actually works before choosing tools, book a free business advisory meeting.
